Farnborough Airshow 2018 – EMCoE highlights

EMCoE were delighted to partner with Space Park Leicester and University of Leicester on their stand in the Space zone. Our neighbours included the Satellite Applications Catapult, CGI, GMV and other international companies, the platform was hosted by the UK Space Agency, UK Space Trade Association, and ESA, at Farnborough International Trade Show 2018 16 – 22 July 2018.

The team talked with over 200 visitors about the development of the Space Park, the SPRINT project, EMCoE and other initiatives in the space sector in Leicester. Our guests were an interesting mix of companies ranging from start-ups to international primes. We had a visit from Apollo 15 astronaut Al Warden, a truly inspiring hero who proved to us that space careers never end! Talking about astronauts and careers: Dr Suzie Imber gave an exciting presentation “Astronauts: Do you have what it takes?” during the Futures Day, designed to stimulate and encourage young people aged 11 – 21 into an exciting career in the dynamic space sector. Suzie also introduced astronaut Tim Peake who gave an inspirational talk about his career and they then posed for photographs with an enthralled audience of young people

The University of Leicester was featured on the big screen in the Space zone pavilion on several occasions. Prof Martin Barstow talked about the importance of creating the Space Park in Leicester and the opportunities offered to SMEs by the SPRINT project; Prof Richard Ambrosi was on stage during the signing ceremony, when the University of Leicester, LLEP and the National Space Centre signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the region of Piemonte in Italy to formally mark the start of the collaborative links between the East Midlands and Piemonte.

That has been a fantastic week for the UK Space sector, and we are excited to follow up with the new contacts and opportunities.
