As part of County Durham’s innovation strategy, we seek to help existing businesses diversify and innovate; encouraging high-tech, high growth businesses to join the growing cluster within County Durham. Business Durham led the consortium to secure the Satellite Applications Centre of Excellence in the North East.

About North East Local Enterprise Partnership (NELEP)
The North East Local Enterprise Partnership (NELEP) is the fourth largest LEP in the UK, covering the local authority areas of County Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, Northumberland, South Tyneside and Sunderland. This geographic area covers 40,315 businesses and a workforce of 850,600, 3.5% of the national total (2012 figures). NELEP are a business-led, strategic body, responsible for promoting and developing economic growth in the North East.

The University has a wide range of expertise which will be of use to the Centre of Excellence, notably in the field of precise satellite positioning, remote sensing, and their applications to climate-related, geophysical, oceanographic and environmental science, precision farming and transport engineering. Its long experience of collaborative research and consultancy with both academic and industrial partners, and excellent facilities, prepares the University for an active role within the Centre.
